Globally acclaimed and locally celebrated musician, composer, playwright, and philanthropist – Dr Mbongeni Ngema opens his Legacy Tour as the first ever artist to host a residency at The Venue in Melrose Arch which ushers in the festivities of the holiday season on Friday 03 December. The residency serves as the launch of a much anticipated homecoming musical experience which will culminate into a national and continental tour.
The Legacy Tour is the icon’s nostalgic return to his roots and his people across the African landscape and it promises to be a highly differentiated and memorable experience. Featuring a collection of South Africa’s rich musical heritage, Dr Ngema and his much loved band will export audiences on a multi-sensory journey of discovery. Fans can also expect new eclectic sounds combined with firm favourites such as Stimela Sase Zola, My Fohloza and Freedom Is Coming Tomorrow which form part the very fibre of our country’s unique history and heritage.
After 40 years of globe-trotting and wooing audiences the world-over with his classic theatre productions including but not limited to the satirical play Woza Albert , Township Fever, Asinamali and the much applauded Sarafina. The legendary talent returns home to launch various impactful projects in music and philanthropy – commencing with the anticipated Legacy tour.
Through his Mbongeni Ngema Foundation, Dr Ngema has formed an organisation called Stimela SaseZola to fight the scourge of gender-based violence. Sometimes known as the “destination of femicide”, South Africa has had a disheartening inclination to trivialize this abuse in the past, leaving women devastated, traumatized and left feeling even more unsafe in their own country. Accountability, apology, and atonement are the pillars on which Mbongeni Ngema now stands on in joining the fight, as a man who has acknowledged being an abusive partner in his past marriages.
“If there are elements of criminality in the community, you need to bring in seasoned criminals to rehabilitate the other criminals”
says Ngema as he emphasizes the importance of reform and strengthening the collective fight against GBV.
Using his music as the main platform, he will educate men about GBV. The proceeds from the Legacy Concert will be donated to the fight against GBV.
