The Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA) sends heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and fans of rapper Riky Rick who passed away today. He was 34.

Riky had a sterling track record at the South African Music Awards (SAMA) organised under the auspices of RiSA. He was a winner in the Best Collaboration category for Mali Eningi by Big Zulu featuring himself and Intaba Yase Dubai at SAMA27 held last year.

He was also a multiple nominee for Male Artist of the Year, Newcomer of the Year, Best Rap Album and Best Music Video at SAMA22. Riky also earned a SAMA nomination for Best Hip Hop Album at SAMA24. He was a presenter and performer on the SAMA stages over the years.

Riky was born Rikhado Muziwendlovu Makhado in KwaMashu, KwaZulu-Natal. He was the founder and owner of Cotton Club Records and Makhado Makhado Agency. His platinum selling debut album titled Family Values was released in 2015. It was followed by Scooby Snacks EP and several singles. He leaves behind a legacy of music with hits like Amantombazane, Boss Zonke and Sidlukotini. He collaborated with younger artists, helping them to navigate the music industry and find their greatness.

An accomplished businessman, he headlined the Cotton Fest series of concerts that he organised. He also fused fashion and music and this propelled him into a trusted and dependable brand that attracted numerous commercial endorsements and red carpet pull-power. RiSA CEO Nhlanhla Sibisi commented:

“The loss of Riky Rick cuts deep. He was a shining light in the hip hop community and a much-loved star of South African music. A consummate performer, humble, kind and respectful is how we will remember him. He leaves behind a blueprint for a critically acclaimed and popular musician, a businessman and a fashionable brand. We are saddened that he is no more and wish peace and comfort for his family, friends and fans. May his soul rest in peace.”
