Bishop Makamu Pays Tribute at Dr SD Gumbi’s Funeral

A rare kind of leader
At the funeral service of the late Dr Simon Dingane Gumbi, Bishop I. Makamu delivered a moving tribute, describing Dr Gumbi as a unique spiritual leader who transcended church denominations.
“uBaba bekangena eRoma ashumayele, angene eZayoni, angene ePostoli,” said Makamu, applauding Gumbi’s commitment to unity in the body of Christ.

Makamu thanked Dr Gumbi for his unwavering generosity and humility, sending him off with heartfelt words:
“Lala uphumule Babu Gumbi, lala uphumule somkhanda, lala uphumule umzukulu kaJazi.”

In his address, Makamu also expressed sorrow over how some had turned their backs on Dr Gumbi during his lifetime, despite his immense contribution to South Africa’s faith landscape. Still, he celebrated Gumbi’s lasting impact as a unifying figure.

A giant in ministry remembered
Dr Simon Dingane Gumbi, a respected evangelist, Assemblies of God leader, gospel composer, and former Ukhozi FM presenter, passed away on Monday, July 14, 2025, at the age of 79 (though some reports say 66). His passing followed a prolonged illness and was announced by Bishop ND Nhlapho on behalf of the Gumbi family and the Assemblies of God church.

A life of service and spiritual influence
Dr Gumbi co-founded and served as a senior pastor and executive member of the Assemblies of God in South Africa. He was known for raising a generation of preachers, mentoring young leaders, and offering marriage counseling. He was also a celebrated gospel producer and led the S.O.S Choir since 1984, with their platinum-selling album Hamba Mzalwane remaining a gospel classic.

Tributes pour in across southern Africa
The Christian community in South Africa, Eswatini, and beyond has mourned his passing, describing him as a “baobab tree” whose legacy will live on. The funeral was live-streamed, with prominent figures including Dr Mbuyiseni Ndlozi in attendance.
