Gospel artist and songwriter Shekinah Motsa is carving her path in the world of gospel music, driven by a deep-rooted faith and a passion for sharing her story.
From her early beginnings singing in church to her recent induction into the acclaimed Spirit of Praise ensemble, Motsa’s journey is a testament to resilience and hope.
Motsa recalls her earliest musical memories, singing in a trio with friends at church in 2005.
“That’s where I discovered I could hold a note,”
she shares, reflecting on her upbringing as the daughter of a pastor.
“Singing gospel music was a natural choice; my local church community instilled the teachings of Christ in me.”
Her journey has not been without setbacks. After a challenging audition for Women In Praise in 2016, which left her feeling defeated, Motsa found unexpected support from her community.
“People were ready to fight when they announced the winner,”
she laughs, highlighting the love that surrounded her despite the disappointment.
In 2020 and 2021, Motsa’s talent was recognized at the Social Media Awards, where she won the Best Gospel Artist award.
“It was shocking because I was focused on my studies at university, yet the recognition showed me the impact I was making,”
she reflects.
Motsa’s debut album,
“My Story,” encapsulates her personal journey and the struggles she has faced. One poignant track, “Ngiphefumlele,” emerged from a dark time when she contemplated taking her life.
“It’s a message of hope and surrender,”
she emphasizes, underlining her commitment to using her music as a source of encouragement.
As she steps into her new role with Spirit of Praise in 2024, Motsa sees this as a significant milestone.
“I wasn’t expecting it at all,”
she admits.
“I hope to bring my authentic self to the ensemble and connect deeply with audiences.”
Looking ahead, Motsa aspires to record a new EP that will expand on her story and impact listeners on a broader scale.
“Success for me isn’t just about awards; it’s about the difference I make in people’s lives,”
she says earnestly.
