Xolly Mncwango, one of the most celebrated voices in South African Contemporary Gospel music, has added a prestigious accolade to her name, winning the Best Female Gospel Artist Award at the 17th Crown Gospel Music Awards.
Hailing from Richards Bay in KwaZulu-Natal, Xolly’s journey into the spotlight began with her roots in her church’s worship team. It was there that her talent was noticed by renowned South African music producer Lindelani Mkhize, who brought her into the esteemed Joyous Celebration collective in the mid-2010s.
Her performance on Joyous Celebration, Vol. 17 (Grateful) [Live] in 2013 served as a pivotal moment, propelling her into the national gospel music scene.
Rising to Prominence
Despite her naturally reserved nature, Xolly embraced the challenges of the music industry. She pursued music theory studies at Varsity College and performed regularly at Durban’s iconic BAT Centre, a hub for developing artists. Her determination saw her singing backup for prominent artists like Benjamin Dube and Khaya Mthethwa, experiences that refined her craft and broadened her musical repertoire.
“I worked with all kinds of artists, even an Afrikaans artist, because I knew every experience was a learning opportunity,”
Xolly shared.
A Breakthrough with Jesus Is Enough
Xolly’s debut solo album, Jesus Is Enough (2020), marked a defining moment in her career. Recorded during the uncertain early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, the album emphasized themes of faith and healing through songs like “Ungukuphila” and “Healing Power”.
“I vividly heard the Lord say, ‘Do this, don’t turn back.’ It was a moment to remind people that we are walking this journey with God,”
she explained.
The album garnered critical acclaim, cementing Xolly as a leading voice in contemporary gospel. She followed this success with her sophomore project, Unusual, which continued her exploration of faith through music.
“I’m just experiencing the unusualness of God and walking in it,”
Xolly said of the project, created with her trusted producer Siyanqoba Mthethwa.
Collaborative Spirit
In addition to her solo work, Xolly has lent her voice to collaborations with fellow gospel artists and other genres. Notably, she worked with rapper Jub Jub on his 2021 single “Ngi Themb’ Wena”.
“I enjoy working with people who have a personal story and a genuine connection to God,”
she said.
A Crowned Star
Winning the Best Female Gospel Artist award is a culmination of Xolly’s years of dedication, faith, and artistic excellence. She continues to inspire audiences with her powerful voice and heartfelt lyrics, bringing hope and healing to listeners across the globe.
As Xolly reflects on her journey, she remains grounded in her mission.
