In a heartfelt tribute shared on social media today, 21 January 2025, gospel singer Mpumi Mtsweni announced the passing of her father.
The 33-year-old Thath’Indawo hitmaker from Emalahleni, Mpumalanga, posted, “To my father, rest in peace,” expressing her deep sorrow.
Mpumi, one of Mzansi’s most beloved gospel stars, has touched the lives of many through her soulful voice and inspiring lyrics. Despite her current success, singing wasn’t always in her plans.
Growing up in Hendrina, Mpumi pursued an education-focused path inspired by her parents, eventually obtaining a qualification in Electrical Engineering from the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT).
However, her passion for gospel music ultimately took precedence. At just 18, Mpumi began her musical journey with the renowned group Gospel Extravaganza.
In 2014, she took a bold step into a solo career, where her talent as a songwriter flourished. Her breakout moment came in 2018 with the live recording of Getsemane Season 1, which was officially released in 2020 and remains a fan favorite.
Mpumi’s dedication to gospel music has seen her release three successful albums, captivating audiences nationwide with her heartfelt songs. While her professional journey is a testament to faith and resilience, today, Mpumi faces personal heartbreak with the loss of her father, a man who instilled in her the value of education and perseverance.
Fans and fellow musicians have flooded Mpumi’s social media with messages of love and support, standing by her during this difficult time.
As Mpumi mourns this tragic loss, her journey as an artist and her unwavering faith remind us of the strength that comes from both family and calling.
